A tool appearing frequently in the news is not enough reason to subscribe. Global AI discovery needs to distinguish attention, usage and purchasing. Using a16z’s seventh consumer-AI report, published 5 October 2026, this article explains how to read market signals without reproducing its ranking or presenting it as our own.
Different measures answer different questions
The report considers web visits, mobile monthly active users and a new panel of observed US consumer-card spending. Their geography, platform and sample differ. Spending-panel observations are not total vendor revenue; web visits do not capture every desktop, embedded or mobile experience.
Keep three evaluation lists
| Question | Useful evidence | What it does not establish |
|---|
| Is it attracting attention? | Comparable activity measures for the same period and geography | Model capability or professional accuracy |
| Does it fit our work? | Representative tasks, reviewed outputs and workflow fit | A public ranking is our best choice |
| Is it worth paying for? | Actual usage, entitlements, review time and alternatives | Other people paying guarantees business returns |
A practical method for teams and sellers
Choose two or three recurring tasks, such as organizing product facts, drafting ad concepts or summarizing support issues. Compare the same inputs, recording corrections, available allowances and operator time. Keep failures as well as successful examples. This is our suggested evaluation method, not a benchmark result from the report.
For general assistants, start with our profiles of ChatGPT,Gemini and Claude. Assess automation, task execution and creative tools against their separate purposes.
Editorial conclusion and scope
Rankings help us discover candidates. Product facts, plans and operating status still require independent official-source checks. This article is not a complete industry census, a capability leaderboard or a paid-account review.
