Research with AI: From Questions to Source Verification
AI can help discover and organize information. Reliable research also needs a clear scope, original sources and human review of important conclusions. This workflow suits everyday product research, learning and work-related information gathering.
1. Define a question that can be checked
Specify the decision, region, time range and output format. Break broad questions into verifiable parts, separating known facts from what still needs evidence.
2. Find primary sources
Check product websites and official documentation for features, and original papers for research findings. Record the URL, publication date and access date. Perplexity can help find web sources and Elicit can organize paper leads. Open and check their citations.
3. Separate facts, inferences and unknowns
Record where each fact appears in the source. Explain the basis and limits of an inference. Keep missing evidence marked as unconfirmed. A fluent summary should not erase conditions, sample boundaries or uncertainty.
4. Resolve conflicts and check freshness
Compare versions, dates, regions and metric definitions when sources disagree. Old prices, features and rules are not automatically current. Preserve unresolved disagreements instead of selecting the most confident-sounding answer.
5. Keep a reviewable record
Save the question, source table, extracted facts, human edits and last review date. For changing information, define what should trigger another check. Use each citation only for the claim it supports.
A reusable prompt
Question: [enter] Scope: [region, dates, subject] Prioritize primary sources. List facts, URLs, relevant passage locations and publication dates. Separate inferences and unconfirmed information. Do not invent references, numbers or features. Explain conflicting sources and list the questions needing human review.
